In late 1944 the requirement for 90mm gunned tank destroyers became urgent, as the allies fought to neutralise the heaviest armoured columns of the Wehrmacht, from this desperate need the M36B1 GMC was born, opting to convert the M4A3 to meet the burgeoning requirement.
