After the Allied landings on the Italian soil in September 1943, King Victor Emmanuel III's loyal Royalist forces arrested Mussolini and overthrew his government. Italy promptly sought an armistice with the Allies, resulting in confusion within the Italian armed forces as they received conflicting orders and briefings. The Army splintered into factions and recognized their lack of heavy armoured vehicles. In response, the RSI and Kingdom of Italy took different paths in reconstructing their armies. In the north, the National Republican Army (ENR) concentrated their mechanized forces into flying reinforcement columns, while in the south, the Co-belligerent Italian Army (ECI) formed more conventional armoured forces with the help of US and British tanks and walkers.
