The MiG 17, a highly successful Soviet jet fighter design in the post-war era, was desired by other nations in the Warsaw Pact as they sought to improve their own air defence capabilities. The aircraft was granted a licence and produced by Poland in 1955, resulting in 477 units being built for both domestic use and export. These Polish-manufactured fighters were referred to as the Lim-5, meaning 'License-built aircraft No.5'. Despite being a challenge for Western pilots, skilled handling of these aircraft could prove to be an effective adversary.
